Broken Bow’s Hunter Shomo-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by Pine Cellular

Year after year, Hunter Shomo has earned a top-five powerlifting finish, continuing an impressive streak that stretches back to seventh grade.

Now a senior at Broken Bow High School, Shomo competes in powerlifting and football. His run of strong finishes reflects more than physical strength. It represents the determination behind the lesson athletics has taught him: “Never give up.”

That mindset matters in both of his sports. Powerlifting asks him to trust his preparation when he steps onto the platform, while football places him alongside teammates working toward the same result. Shomo said the team has influenced him instead of one person.

“The whole team,” he said. “We hold each other accountable.”

That accountability is matched by support from the Broken Bow community. Shomo appreciates the fans who show up regardless of the outcome.

“Our great fan base follows us to every game, year after year, win or lose,” he said.

His school pride is not limited to football or powerlifting. Although he is not directly involved in other organizations, Shomo wants students across Broken Bow to know their efforts matter.

“Even though I may not directly be involved with other clubs or organizations, I’m cheering for each and every one,” he said.

One of Shomo’s most memorable teachers dates back to third grade. He remembers Mrs. Lee for making certain her students were prepared during an important school year.

“Probably Mrs. Lee in third [grade], because it’s such a big year for state testing, and she made sure we knew all we needed to know,” Shomo said.

He credits every coaching staff that has challenged him throughout the years. Each one, he said, has pushed him to improve and helped shape the athlete he has become.

As he completes his senior year, Shomo offers advice rooted in the same confidence and persistence that have guided his athletic career.

“Always be true to yourself,” he said.

That message fits an athlete who has spent years proving that progress is not built through one performance. It comes from accepting challenges, remaining accountable and continuing to work long after the first success.
