Broken Bow’s Claire Dees – Cheer Spotlight – Presented by New Century Abstract

Claire Dees, a senior captain of the Broken Bow High School varsity cheer squad, has been a driving force on and off the field. Her cheer journey began in middle school, but the seeds were planted years earlier. “Since I was a little girl, my mom would take me to the Broken Bow games where I would watch the cheerleaders. I knew I wanted to be just like them someday,” Claire said.

Even though the squad had to adjust after losing nine seniors last year, Claire emphasizes the resilience and unity of the team. “We have done a good job of working together and keeping each other accountable. We work really hard each week to prepare to cheer on the Savages.”

As a cheer captain, Claire knows the responsibility that comes with leadership. “I really had to step up this year and be a leader for my team. The other captains and I work together to make decisions for the best interest of the team.” Her leadership skills have been crucial, especially as the team sets its sights on making it to the state competition. “Our goal this year is to make it to state. I would love for us to make the top 5 like we did my sophomore year,” she added.

One of Claire’s most challenging moments was overcoming a torn ACL during her junior year tryouts. “I made a quick recovery and actually ended up cheering the whole season. I didn’t want to sit out a whole year, so I took my recovery seriously and pushed myself in physical therapy,” she explained. Her determination and resilience are a testament to her strong work ethic.

When asked about her inspiration, Claire credits her late father, who passed away when she was just eight years old. “He taught me to work hard towards my goals and never give up. It’s been challenging without him, but I know he would be proud of me.”

Looking ahead, Claire plans to continue her cheer career at the collegiate level while attending a state university. With her dedication and passion, there’s no doubt she’ll continue to soar.
