Maliyah Carney started playing softball when she was nine years old. The Carney family is a softball family and it was only natural for Maliyah to start playing the sport at an early age. Currently Carney plays for the Broken Bow Lady Savages.
“Everyone in my family has played softball in one way or another,” Carney said.
Carney has enjoyed success in softball thus far into her career at Broken Bow. Her favorite memory occurred last spring when the Lady Savages made a trip to state. While Carney loves competing in games and practice she also appreciates the camaraderie that comes with being on a team. There are certain characteristics that she looks for in herself and teammates.
“I think the best qualities one can bring to the team is the willingness to learn more about the game and to always give 110% effort every time they step on the field,” Carney said.
Carney stays motivated through the encouragement of her teammates and coaches but is also inspired by All-American University of Oklahoma standout Jordy Bahl.
“When it comes to pitching Jordy Bahl inspires me with her fierceness in the circle,” Carney said. “That is something I strive for in myself.”
Outside of athletics Carney takes academics seriously and works hard to maintain good grades. Her favorite subject is English and after high school Carney wants to further her education by attending college. Although she doesn’t know what major she would want to study, she has plenty of time to figure it out and will no doubt find something that sparks her interest and passion. Carney also hopes to continue her softball career by playing at the next level.
