Broken Bow’s Avery Skelton – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by McCurtain County National Bank

Avery Skelton, a dynamic junior at Broken Bow High School, asserts her athleticism on the basketball court. As a forward, she doesn’t merely play the game; she embodies a relentless pursuit of excellence, fueled by an unwavering motivation to honor God, uplift her teammates and grow both as an athlete and an individual. In Avery’s life, familial influences emerge as the bedrock of her journey, with her mom, older sister Addison and cousin Molly Rogers serving as beacons of inspiration. Drawing wisdom from their walks with Christ, Avery finds herself not just chasing victory but embodying the qualities of a leader, both encouraging and resilient.

Amidst the academic landscape at Broken Bow, Mrs. Brannan stands out as a guiding force, leaving a big impact on Avery’s life: “Mrs. Brannan has had the biggest impact on my life because she has always believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.”

Avery’s success is not solely a product of innate talent; rather, it results from rigorous efforts in the weight room, countless hours on the court and an unrelenting pursuit of improvement, both physically and mentally. “It took a lot of hard work in the weight room, spending time on the court even on days off, watching film, and improving my mindset to remain positive along the way.”

Reflecting on the pinnacle moments of her career, Avery finds profound joy in sharing the court with her cousins. “Playing on the same teams as my cousins” stands out as a significant highlight, a testament to the familial bonds woven into her basketball journey. She also acknowledges the thrill of competition, stating, “I don’t really have a favorite opponent I like to beat. A win is a win in my book.”

In practice, Avery finds a worthy sparring partner in her cousin Katie Rogers. “I enjoy working against my cousin, Katie Rogers, because playing against her helps me get better on defense and offense.”

Beyond the court, Avery is a multifaceted student, actively involved in student council, yearbook and leading the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. For Avery, representing Broken Bow isn’t just about scoring points; it’s a commitment to excellence: “It means that I have a good attitude and sportsmanship. I hold a sense of pride knowing that I represent a great school and community.”
