At Brown Bow High School, leadership wears many forms—and for senior Kruse Ward, it looks like calm decision-making, quick thinking, and an unwavering commitment to his teammates. As captain of the academic team, Ward has proven that being a leader isn’t just about knowing the most answers—it’s about guiding the team with strategy, composure, and heart.
Academic competition moves fast. Questions come in rapid succession, decisions are made in seconds, and every choice can change the outcome of a round. Ward has learned to thrive under that pressure, balancing logic and instinct while fostering teamwork and communication among his peers.
“Kruse is an outstanding member of the team. He is our team captain, and lives up to the name,” said coach Rebekah Clowers. “Being a captain for the Academic Team is not just about scoring the most, it’s about being able to make split-second, under-pressure decisions for the team. It’s about listening to all the other members of the team, while still staying true to what they know, as well. The final aspect of being a captain is accepting responsibility when a decision turns out to be wrong. Kruse fulfills all of these characteristics, and he does it with style. He supports and encourages his teammates, he makes the hard decisions, he takes responsibility when decisions don’t work out but shares the glory when they do. On top of all that, he’s a top scorer for the team, coming in clutch with knowledge in areas like math, science, mechanics, and pop culture.”
Ward’s combination of intellect and leadership has elevated the entire Brown Bow squad. He approaches every match with focus and humility, ensuring each team member has a voice.
Whether he’s answering a physics question under pressure or guiding a debate in practice, Ward represents the best of Brown Bow—intelligent, composed, and passionate about learning. Through his leadership, the school’s academic excellence continues to shine.
