Broken Bow’s Mackenzie Dansby – Band Spotlight – Presented by Jennifer Broades State Farm Insurance

By Payton Moody

The heartbeat of any great marching band is its drum major, and at Broken Bow High School, Mackenzie Dansby carries this responsibility with grace and passion. As a senior and the drum major of the Broken Bow High School Band, her journey is a testament to dedication, leadership and a love for music that resonates beyond the field.

In the world of music, mentors hold a special place. For Dansby, her two favorite music teachers, Mr. Harley Thomas and Mrs. Kim Thomas, have played a pivotal role. “They have pushed me to be the best version of myself I can be,” she said.

Every band has its leaders within, and Dansby found inspiration in her friend and fellow band member, ChabelliMendoza. “She took me under her wing and helped shape me into the leader I am today,” Dansby reminisces.

Beyond the band room, Dansby’s favorite teacher, Mrs. Shelly Bishop, made a lasting impact. During a challenging period in her life, Mrs. Bishop provided not just education but also love and laughter.

As drum major, Dansby understands the importance of preparation. However, this season, it’s not just about perfecting the notes; it’s about savoring every moment. “This season is all about enjoying every moment with my best friends,” she remarks.

Music and band have taught Dansby responsibility. “Mr. Harley Thomas prepares us for life beyond high school,” she explains. Band practice isn’t just about hitting the right notes; it’s about being responsible and punctual, valuable skills for adulthood.

This year, Dansby hopes to see her fellow band members pour their hearts into every note. Their show is filled with emotions, and she believes that giving their best will create a memorable experience for all.

The role of a drum major is not just about leading; it’s about witnessing growth. “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a new member fall in love with marching band just as I did,” says Dansby, emphasizing the joy of nurturing the band’s future.

Beyond high school, Dansby plans to attend a university to pursue a degree in sonography, her passion for music and leadership serving as a strong foundation for her future endeavors.
