Broken Bow senior Jakyran Whitfield is a ballplayer first, but he soars with confidence in any athletic setting.
Asked if football, where he stars at receiver and safety, is his best sport, Whitfield said “probably, but [I’m] just an athlete. I’m good at everything I play or do.”
Whitfield also excels on the basketball court and on the track for the Savages.
“For sure, it’s fun, then it’s all back-to-back, so I get out of one sport then jump straight in another sport like the next week,” Whitfield said. “I like it though. It’s grinding.”
Whitfield has great aspirations for his football career.
“My definition of success is getting me and my family to the top and my mom not having to work no more,” Whitfield said. “So basically, I ain’t succeeded in nothing yet.”
Whitfield is driven by his family to reach such heights. His more immediate goal for this season is to win a state championship.
“I’m coming different, just have to wait ‘till the season starts. It’s going to show the work I put in, going to show off the field,” Whitfield said.
To reach his long-term goals of playing professionally, Whitfield said he will have to keep his head on straight and “stay grinding and working putting the time in.”
